What's A Nauga Farm?

My Google email is naugafarm@gmail.com. (You're welcome to email me.) I've had many people ask me where I came up with that, or what is a Nauga farm? I think the story is worth sharing in case anyone is needing a chuckle today.

Many years ago, when I was in college in Idaho, I had an interesting conversation with a California girl. She was very nice. Now, in spite of the fact that she was blond, from California, and used phrases like "gag me with a fork", I do not have any prejudice against anyone who fits any of those descriptions! As we visited, she asked me where I was from. I told her "Montana".

She said "Wow! Really? Then you're Canadian, huh?" She seemed pretty excited at the prospect of meeting a real live foreigner. I said "no" and explained where Montana was, and that it was next to Canada, so she wouldn't feel like she was too far off. She asked if we had electricity, had to ride horses to get around, and a few other things like that. I answered all her questions until her curiosity was satisfied. She just kind of looked at me, like she was processing the whole thing, and then said "Well... what do you guys DO there? I mean like, what does your dad do for a living?"

I couldn't resist. I said "He raises Naugas."

She asked "What's a Nauga?"

I said "Do you know what Naugahyde is?"

"Oh ya! That leather stuff they cover chairs and things with!"

"Exactly! Well, he raises Naugas and sells their hides."

She was satisfied, and that was the end of the conversation.

  1. Waahhhahahahaaa! I actually was pretty sure where this was going, but that's too too funny. I'm going go out on a limb here and say something terribly politically incorrect but..........city folks are so DUMB! Bless their hearts. I've had "cities" argue with me that a cow was a bull cause it's "got horns!" or that you can't get eggs without a rooster! or........wow, potatoes grow in the GROUND?!? My current favorite is when they find out we have dairy goats. Oh yeah? Do you milk them? Yup. What do you do with the milk? Oh I get up each and every....single.....day to milk and then I just pour it out on the ground......WE DRINK IT YOU FOOL! lol, sooo sooo soo funny! I suppose I should start being more understanding huh?

  4. You guys are so fun!! I LOVE reading some of your comments!!! And yes Joe, Montana is a state, but since it was added later than most of the others, some people might not have gotten that far in geography yet. Ha Ha!

  6. Just to be fair I have to tell you a story about when I first moved to Montana from California. A native of Montana asked me what "beach" I lived near in California. I said I actually lived in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and not near a beach. She looked confused and asked me how I liked living in a 'small town' (meaning Kalispell). I explained I loved living in a small town but that Kalispell was actually a bigger town than the one I moved from. She said, "Oh, I thought you said you were from California." After more conversation and some questions going back and forth it became clear that she thought everyone in California lived on the coast and in big cities. She had never thought that some of us were not all that different than she -- small town country folks with an appreciation for natural beauty and open space. Guess there's some education needed on both sides.

  7. We meet all kinds, don't we!!! There are some pretty back-woodsy "hillbillies" around here, too. I guess if you've never strayed too far from your neck of the woods, you have no idea what other places are like. TV and Hollywood portrayals are all some people see - of a lot of places!
